Kathy's Blog May 2010

I wonder why it is that young people with Parkinson's don't join the UPBEAT group in their area?

Is it because they don't want to go public?

Is it because they see it as an old persons' disease and think that only 'old' people will be there?

Is it because they are busy working?

Does UPBEAT need to offer something that it currently does not?

The UPBEAT conference I attended in 2008 in Hamilton was fantastic.  I meet others of similar ages with PD and spoke with them and their partners over the weekend and it was most informative.  But other than the UPBEAT group in Palmerston North, I didn't get the impression that other regions had active groups.  Am I wrong?

Here in Hawke's Bay I have tried to start the ball rolling and other than a couple of meetings, nothing else has happened.

What can we do?

Comments would be most appreciated!

PS There is to be an UPBEAT conference in Palmerston North 5/6/7 Novemebr 2010 - BE THERE!!!!

In response to your blog asking why young people with PD don't join upbeat. In this case, it is because of work commitments. There doesn't seem to be a support group that meets at a time that suits work commitments of a full time worker.

If there IS one in the Wellington regional area, I would be very interested. I look forward to a response here.

There is an early-onset group in Wellington who meet out of work hours, however currently these are occasional rather than regular events.  Please get in touch with the Wellington Field Officer Diane wgtnfieldofficer@xtra.co.nz who can tell you more.
